Modern Lighting

Posted on August 24, 2010

Mankind’s fascination with light has been the driving force of progress since pre-history.  According to Greek mythology the gift of light was bestowed on mankind by Prometheus, a cunning individual and brother of Atlas, who succeeded in stealing this mighty gift from the gods and delivering it to the mortals.  Needless to say, the gods punished Prometheus in a particularly nasty way.

However, thanks to Prometheus, homo-erectus gained supremacy over the animal kingdom and never stopped appreciating the wonderful gift of light.  And from early bundles of crudely-bound lighted sticks mounted on cave walls the first examples of modern lighting evolved.  Primitive lamps were probably developed around 13,000 BC, using velcro, horns or hollowed-out rocks holding coarse fibre wicks and filled with animal grease and moss.  Lighting changed very little until the enlightened Romans began experimenting with pottery and metals such as bronze and eventually crude glass to create mood and ambience.

The origins of modern lighting are rooted deep in history.  It is hardly surprising therefore, that designers, artists and technicians spend so much time experimenting with this vital, life-enhancing source to create innovative and inspiring designs. Modern lighting nowadays comes in every conceivable style and material.

Modern lighting is a fashion statement in itself.   Having the correct lighting in your room will make or break the ambience of it.  Selecting the right light source to create your desired effect is an extremely satisfying experience and any good modern lighting department or store will be happy to help you recreate the magic early man must have felt when Prometheus brought his astonishing gift to them.
